ROUSSEAUX URN · Underwater hydroacoustics

Underwater noise monitoring and measurement: anthropogenic and natural.

In the aquatic environment, sound is the primary channel for the transfer of information and energy. We offer comprehensive hydroacoustic solutions, adapted to both restricted and open waters.

The underwater soundscape

Understanding the soundscape requires a multidimensional approach.

From quantifying the noise generated by human activity —vessels, port operations and infrastructure— to the precise characterization of non-anthropogenic ambient background noise: biophony and geophony.

At ROUSSEAUX we offer comprehensive hydroacoustic solutions adapted to both restricted waters —rivers, estuaries, navigation channels and port areas— and open waters: open sea, coastal zones and deep waters.

Operating environments

Two scenarios, two acoustic dynamics.

Restricted and shallow waters

Rivers, estuaries, river channels and port basins where acoustic propagation is confined by shallow depth, topographic boundaries and complex interaction with the sediment bed.

Open and deep waters

Continental shelf, oceanic zones and protected marine areas where free-field dynamics and surface reflections prevail.

Program 01

Non-anthropogenic underwater noise measurement.

Environmental baselines to understand natural background noise, before human activity enters the scene.

Characterization of the natural soundscape

We measure and map geophony —wind, waves, currents, rain— and biophony: the communication of cetaceans, marine mammals, fish and benthic fauna.

Baselines for EIAs

We determine the ambient noise level (background noise) prior to the development of infrastructure projects, dredging or the opening of new shipping routes.

Sensitive and protected areas

We assess acoustic health in vulnerable habitats to determine masking thresholds and loss of biological communication space.

Program 02

Characterization of radiated noise from vessels.

We certify the acoustic signature of vessels both in open sea and in restricted waterways, under the international ISO 17208-1, 2 and 3:2025 standard, using adjusted propagation loss models (SSCI and Lloyd's Mirror).

Efficiency diagnostics and energy leaks

We identify the mechanical causes of excess noise to optimize fuel consumption.

  • Cavitation: detection of cavitation inception (CIS) and loss of thrust.
  • Propeller singing: diagnosis of blade resonances for their technical elimination.
  • Machinery and flow: assessment of structural vibrations and friction from biofouling.

Management plans and ESG reports

We design and implement technical and operational roadmaps to reduce the acoustic footprint (URN-RP).

  • Supporting documentation for sustainability reports.
  • Alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 14 — Life Below Water.
Operational return on investment

We link the reduction of anthropogenic noise with hydrodynamic efficiencies that represent fuel savings of between 5% and 15%.
